Water Protection

Long Island's drinking water comes from underground. Groundwater feeds all of the lakes, bays, and harbors throughout the Island. Groundwater contamination is increasing, threatening drinking water quality.

Ways of protecting the environment

Donec blandit luctus laoreet. Donec dui arcu dapibus

  1. Flushing unused drugs is a highly prevalent and preventable source of pharmaceutical pollution. Therefore, a critical part of the solution is to STOP flushing drugs.
  2. Bring your own bag! In an effort to protect the environment, individuals, businesses and municipalities have been making the switch to cost effective reusable bags.
  3. Actively engage legislators by directly facilitating communication in regards to preserving earth, water, and air!

Success Stories

REDUCING DISPOSABLE BAG POLLUTION

According to the EPA, between 500 billion and a trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. These bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, but they remain in our landfills, oceans, parks and beaches for thousands of years. Both plastic and paper disposable bags are costly, environmentally damaging, and completely unnecessary.

PROTECTING POLLINATOR HEALTH IN CONNECTICUT

A growing body of research indicates that neo- nicotinoid pesticides are a significant contributor to the collapse of pollinator populations we have seen across the U.S. in recent years. In 2016, CCE successfully advocated for legislation aimed at protecting pollinator health by classifying neo-nicotinoid pesticides as ―restricted use‖ meaning that they would no longer be available to the general public.

PHARMACEUTICAL DISPOSAL

Pharmaceutical drug contamination in our groundwater, rivers, estuaries, lakes, and bays is an emerging issue throughout NY, CT, and the nation. Flushing unwanted or unused medication has been the common disposal practice, despite the fact that our sewage treatment plants, septic systems, and drinking water infrastructure were never designed to remove these contaminants.
